Overview

Wiersbe's "Be" Series on the Old Testament—Practical, devotional, and concise describes the "Be" series. Each of these mini-commentaries contains a wealth of practical insight into God's Word. This resource covers chapters 1 through 11 of the book of Genesis.

When things start to fall apart, get back to the basics!

The Book of Genesis is the "book of beginnings" in the Bible, and the first eleven chapters present the "basics." These chapters are to life what a foundation is to a house or what the Constitution is to the law of the land. If you want to build a life that succeeds, to face and solve life's problems, to serve effectively, you start with the basics.

In Be Basic, you'll become reacquainted with the accounts of Creation, Adam and Eve, Noah and the Great Flood, and the Tower of Babel, and in the process you'll…

  • Learn the basic truths about God and people;
  • Discover the basics about the world you live in;
  • Understand the basics about sin and temptation;
  • Marvel at the basic truths that make life work

Logos Bible Software dramatically improves the value of this resource by enabling you to find what you’re looking for with unparalleled speed and precision. Scripture passages link to your favorite translation and you can easily study it side-by-side with the other commentaries in your digital library. This makes the text more powerful and easier to access than ever before for scholarly work or personal study.

Top Highlights

“What is ‘the lie’ (singular) that has ruled civilization since the fall of man? It’s the belief that men and women can be their own god and live for the creation and not the Creator and not suffer any consequences.” (Page 62)

“Cain wasn’t rejected because of his offering, but his offering was rejected because of Cain: his heart wasn’t right with God. It was ‘by faith’ that Abel offered a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain (Heb. 11:4), which means that he had faith in God and was right with God.” (Pages 74–75)

“God didn’t create a world because He needed anything but that He might share His love with creatures who, unlike the angels, are made in the image of God and can respond willingly to His love.” (Page 15)

“Third, we were created to have dominion over the earth” (Page 30)

“Ecclesiastes. Cain’s name reminds us that life comes from God, while Abel’s name tells us that life is brief.” (Page 72)

    Wiersbe is a master expositional preacher. His textual outlines while uncritical are exceptionally memorable and highly popular in communicating to the masses. He should not be dismissed because he focuses primarily on reaching the pew rather than feeding scholars.
