Overview

This book deals with the practical moral problems that every man must face, no less the Christian than the pagan. The emphasis on Sin is set against the reality of Redemption. "If sin is a radical twist with a supernatural originator, salvation is a radical re-adjustment with a supernatural Originator" ... "It is only the right view of sin and right thinking about sin that ever will explain Jesus Christ's life and death and resurrection."

Top Highlights

“Lust simply means, ‘I must have this at once’; it may be a bodily appetite or a spiritual possession. The principle lust works on is, ‘I must have it at once, I cannot wait for God’s time, God is too indifferent,’ that is the way lust works.” (source)

“It is not a sin to have a body, to have natural appetites, but it is a sin to refuse to sacrifice them at the word of God.” (source)

“It is only the right view of sin and right thinking about sin that ever will explain Jesus Christ’s Life and Death and Resurrection. It is sin that He came to cope with; He did not come to cope with the poor little mistakes of men, they cope with their own mistakes; He came to give them a totally new stock of heredity, that is, He came to implant into them His own nature, so that Satan’s power in the soul is absolutely destroyed, not counteracted.” (source)

“Our Lord spoke about men as sheep; a sheep has no set conscious purpose to go wrong, it simply wanders; and our Lord used the illustration for men; the majority of men wander like sheep without any conscious bad intent at all.” (source)

“The soul, remember, is simply the spirit of a man expressing itself.” (source)

I think the title of the book is misleading, I fail to see any philosophy in it as the title suggests. Moreover, it makes sin independent or existing with a mind of its own. While there are helpful aspects in the book to understand the nature of sin, labeling as a philosophy gives it a wrong impression.
