Overview

In The Composition and Date of Acts, Charles C. Torrey champions that the first fifteen chapters of the Book of Acts represents a translation into Greek from an Aramaic source. He shows that the original language of the first half of Acts is Aramaic, the idioms rendered literally—even the order of words is preserved. For comparison, Torrey provides Aramaic examples from the 2nd and 3rd centuries, the Onkelos Targum, the Megillath Taanith, and other pieces of Judaic literature.

Charles C. Torrey (1863–1956) was Professor of Semitic Languages at Andover Theological Seminary from 1892–1900. Torrey later went on to become Professor of Semitic Languages at Yale University from 1900–1932.
