Overview

Genesis is the first of the five books of Moses and it unfolds God’s work through the biographies of Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and others. Starting with the words “In the beginning …,” it presents the beginnings, or origins, of the universe, the human race, sin, death, and God’s gracious work of bringing fallen humanity back to himself. Each volume includes the complete text of the NIV book of the Bible. The Christ-centered commentaries following the Scripture sections contain explanations of the text, historical background, maps, illustrations, and archaeological information.

“We notice also that in the fall both Adam and Eve abandoned their God-given roles. Eve, designed by God to be a helper for the man, presumed to act as leader of the family—and spiritual leader, no less. And Adam, designed to be the spiritual head of the family, abandoned his leadership role and listened to his wife instead of to God.” (Page 48)

“God has not told us everything we might like to know. After all, the purpose of the Bible is not to satisfy our curiosity but to enable us to live this life with real meaning and to find our place at the side of the Father.” (Page 10)

“There he built another altar and ‘called on the name of the Lord’ or, more precisely, ‘proclaimed the name of the Lord.’” (Page 122)

“God’s creation. Some Bible students have seen ‘the image of God’ as only a reference to man’s humanness, his self-consciousness, his intellect. But that is clearly not the biblical meaning of the term. Even after Adam and Eve fell into sin and lost the divine image, they retained their human personality and their powers of intellect. The image of God cannot describe a physical resemblance to God since God is a spirit. The New Testament describes the divine image as a special knowledge, knowing God to be the source of every blessing (Colossians 3:10). It also describes the divine image as holiness, an absence of sinfulness (Ephesians 4:24).” (Page 24)

“There are two reasons. First, God chose Abram to become the father of a new nation, the nation of Israel, the nation that would be the cradle of the Savior. But there is a second reason why Abram gets so much attention in both the Old and New Testaments. The way God dealt with Abram is typical of the way God deals with every sinner. The better we understand how God spoke to Abram, the better we will understand what God has to say to a world of sinners today.” (Page 118)

This is an excellent commentary that brings out so many interesting facts and nuances of God's power and how this ties to all the other books of the Bible. Truly an awesome God.
