Overview

Hundreds of field-tested activities will help you in the four components of healthy small group life, as well as in evaluating your small group. You'll find ideas for worship and prayer that will help you stretch the boundaries of group members and learn from one another.

Top Highlights

“The commons game by Dave Suryk, Ill. Go around the circle and take five minutes to see how many somewhat interesting things everyone has in common (all are left-handed, no one ever wore braces, and so on). Things like ‘we have feet’ don’t count.” (source)

“Affirmation exercise by Ann Beyerlein, Ill. Write each person’s name on the top of a sheet of paper. Pass the pages around the group and write words of affirmation and encouragement on each person’s page. Use these pages to thank God for each other.” (source)

“There are four sections which represent the four key components of a small group: community, worship and prayer, nurture, and outreach.” (source)

“More than a word by Tom Sirinides. Each person answers the question ‘When, if ever, did God become more than a word to you?’” (source)

“E-mail encouragement by Amy Brooke, Ind. Break the group up into partners who will e-mail each other regularly to challenge one another to keep up with quiet times and Bible study. Talk about what God is teaching you between small groups or as you reflect on the small group meeting.” (source)

I especially appreciate the inspiration and reminded that the first chapter provided me! It alone was well worth the money I paid for the book! I realised that I had focused too much on faithful bible studying in the small group setting, that I had forgotten to include the occasional relationship-building activity. I would have appreciated if Chapter One (titled Community Resources) of ice breakers and activities were twice as long, because the better quality suggestions that I had marked out for usewere only about 15. As a former applied drama student in polytechnic, I am inspired to revisit that world and adapt the ice breaker activities for gospel and small group settings. This book is targeted at novice and first-time small group leaders. More experienced leaders would possibly find that chapters two to four do not offer much new information. The countless references to the IVCF (InterVarsity Christian Fellowship) were a distraction, hopefully these would be reduced in the revised edition.
