Overview

This book teaches clearly and biblically the purpose of the stars and addresses the question of extraterrestrial life. Dr. Burgess explains how the earth has a unique purpose in supporting life, and how the stars have a singular purpose in shining light on it. He explains why the universe contains such natural beauty and how the stars reveal God's character. This book presents many fascinating facts about the universe.

Top Highlights

“It is interesting to note that until modern times there was no obvious reason to believe that there was a special atmosphere around the Earth. This is because the Earth’s atmosphere is invisible when looking from the surface of the Earth. Only in modern times have observations from space shown that there is a very distinct atmosphere that clings to the Earth. The fact that the book of Genesis, which was written thousands of years ago, highlights the atmosphere as being a major part of creation, shows that the Bible is not based on the ideas of man but that it has been inspired by God.” (Page 14)

“It is useful to note that there are three types of heaven mentioned in the Bible: the first heaven, the second heaven and the third heaven. The first heaven is the Earth’s atmosphere (Genesis 1:8), the second heaven is the space of the entire Universe (Genesis 1:1) and the third heaven is the spiritual heaven (2 Corinthians 12:2). Even though the term ‘second heaven’ can sometimes include the stars, in Genesis 1:1 it refers only to the space of the Universe.” (Page 12)

“The principle that there was no decay before the Fall seems to have strong scriptural support. For example, the current decay of the stars is described in Hebrews 1:10–11, where we read that the stars will ‘perish’ and ‘grow old like a garment’. The fact that Hebrews 1 tells us that the stars will grow old, strongly indicates that the stars were not growing old before the Fall.” (Page 27)

“There are three other aspects of the biblical creation account which show that the Earth is of particular importance in the Universe. Firstly, the Earth was the first object to be made in the Universe.” (Page 17)

There is a great need for a book which gives clear biblical teaching on the purpose of the stars and the question of extra-terrestrial life. This book meets that need.

Dr. Burgess has a very clear style, and his book brims with interesting material. It will be greatly appreciated.
