This volume is comprised of five lectures, delivered by J. A. Broadus to a popular audience at Newton Theological Institution in 1875. This work discusses preaching styles, as well as French and English preachers throughout history.
[Broadus'] textbook...is the most widely used text on preaching ever published; more than a century later, it is still used in many colleges and seminaries.
—Michael Duduit, Handbook of Contemporary Preaching
J. A. Broadus was one of the founding faculty of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Professor of Homiletics. A master of clarity in communication and sympathy with his audience, he was also considered to be one of the foremost American pastors during the last half of the nineteenth century.
