Digital Verbum Edition
This volume consists of basic texts that reveal the spirituality of the Modern Devout, especially during the early years of the movement from 1380 to 1430. The “Modern Devotion” movement, which was originated by a Dutchman, Master Geerte Grote, is the classic expression of later medieval religious life. This book places the accumulated wisdom of the Modern Devout before the reader and invites modern day Christians to follow the path of faith.
For a massive collection including over a hundred and twenty of the volumes in this series, see the Classics of Western Spirituality Bundle (126 vols.).
“This book, then, which translates for the first time the sayings and teachings of the Brothers and Sisters of the Modern Devotion, presents the context or ‘incubator,’ so to speak, out of which The Imitation of Christ almost certainly was born.” (Page 10)
“Most pertinent were questions as to the good or holy life and how best to achieve it, the place of education in clerical and Christian life generally, and the free organization of voluntary groups with a common spirit and a common religious purpose.” (Page 10)
“Those who, after they have gone to the holy sacrament, find themselves more cautious and inward and wise and understanding have evidence that they truly prepared themselves properly in advance.” (Page 234)
