Origen stands firm as one of the most prolific and influential of the Early Church Fathers. His impact was felt by many of the other Fathers—including Athanasius, Jerome, and the Cappadocian Fathers. Origen’s works give us insight into the life and thought of 3rd century Christianity that simply would not otherwise exist. Though for a time his works were avoided and condemned, his legacy endures to this day in his surviving writings.
This collection brings together some of Origen’s homilies and commentaries on sacred Scripture—many of which have never before been translated into English. In his own lifetime, students would flock to hear Origen preach and teach. These texts clearly illustrate why: Origen’s keen theological insight, deep faith, and love for the Word of God help shed light on the sacred page. Also included in this collection is the classic Apology for Origen written to defend his legacy from his detractors.
Origen (c. 182–251) was a Christian scholar and theologian and one of the most distinguished of the fathers of the early Christian Church. He is thought to have been born at Alexandria, and died at Caesarea. His writings are important as the first serious intellectual attempt to describe Christianity.
