This delightful little book on the gifts of the Spirit preserves not only the insight of a classical Pentecostal, Howard Carter, but his personality as well. Put together from a series of “anecdotal lectures” on the gifts delivered during a brief pastorate, Spiritual Gifts and Their Operation retains the informal quality, the asides, the spontaneity, of oral delivery. So along with reading for understanding, read for getting acquainted with this Pentecostal pioneer, a founding member of the Assemblies of God in Great Britain and Ireland. Sit in that first audience and listen to this pastor who would not have his people ignorant of the gifts. But don’t concentrate so hard on what's being said that you don’t hear how it's being said-by a man of humor as well as insight.
Howard Carter spent the war years in prison. While there he wrestled with the contemporary meaning of the Spirit’s gifts. Later he accepted the headship of Hampstead Bible School in London, educating and influencing students for ministry for 27 years. A bachelor for most of his life, at 64 he married the widow of a former general superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Wesley Steelberg. Howard Carter died in 1971 at the age of 80.
