Overview

The New American Commentary series brings the best of contemporary evangelical scholarship that honors the full trustworthiness and authority of Scripture to the task of serious exegetical and theological exposition of the Word.

Since a commentary is a fundamental tool for the expositor or teacher who seeks to interpret and apply Scripture in the church or classroom, the New American Commentary focuses on communicating the theological structure and content of each biblical book. The writers seek to illuminate both the historical meaning and contemporary significance of Holy Scripture.

In its attempt to make a unique contribution to the Christian community, the New American Commentary focuses on two concerns. First, the commentary emphasizes how each section of a book fits together so that the reader becomes aware of the theological unity of each book and of Scripture as a whole. The writers, however, remain aware of the Bible’s inherently rich variety. Second, the New American Commentary is produced with the conviction that the Bible primarily belongs to the church. Scholarship and the academy provide an indispensable foundation for biblical understanding and the service of Christ, but the editors and authors of this series have attempted to communicate the findings of their research in a manner that will build up the whole body of Christ. Thus, the commentary concentrates on theological exegesis, while providing practical, applicable exposition.

The New American Commentary is for those who have been seeking a commentary that honors the Scriptures, represents the finest in contemporary evangelical scholarship, and lends itself to the practical work of preaching and teaching. This series serves as a minister’s friend and a student’s guide.

The New American Commentary assumes the inerrancy of Scripture, focuses on the intrinsic theological and exegetical concerns of each biblical book, and engages the range of issues raised in contemporary biblical scholarship. Drawing on the skills and insights of over 40 scholars, the New American Commentary brings together scholarship and piety to produce a tool that enhances and supports the life of the church.

The New American Commentary Series is in active development by B&H. This collection includes 43 of the planned 45 series volumes.

  • Commentary based on the New International Version
  • The NIV text printed in the body of the commentary
  • Sound scholarly methodology that reflects capable research in the original languages
  • Interpretation that emphasizes the theological unity of each book and of Scripture as a whole
  • Readable and applicable exposition
The New American Commentary is a user friendly tool for advanced Bible study, which fills an important need for pastors, students, and laity alike. It is an exciting combination of exegetical insight, and written to be read. An important new resource for serious students of the bible, The New American Commentary belongs on every pastor’s shelf and in every church library.

David E Aune Walter Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins, University of Notre Dame

The New American Commentary is just what the preacher needs. It is scholarly and well-researched without pedantry or obtuseness; the writing is clear and informative and gets right to the heart of biblical exposition; the theological emphasis is much to be desired and uniformly on target. Many a pastor will appreciate this approach, and the series will do much to enrich, stimulate, and encourage biblical expository preaching in our day.

Ralph P. Martin professor of biblical studies, University of Sheffield

The New American Commentary is characterized by scholarship which is well informed, mature in its interpretation, and discerning in its judgement. But even more basic is the foundational commitment of the authors to the full trustworthiness of Scripture. The design achieves the appropriate balance of analytic investigation of the text, faithful exegesis and exposition which is homiletically accessible for application to current life situations. Both learning and ministry are well served.

Been using this to study many whole texts across both testaments, and it has been my most consistently solid resource. The commentators are excellent to begin with, and they do a good enough job of 'showing their work' that by the end, you don't just know whether you agree with their conclusions or not--you know WHY and can feel confident. Also, the introductions to each book alone are worthwhile purchases!

A quality series, several have served as my staple, now I've expanded to some newer titles with more recent findings in historical, archaeological and literary scholarship, but the NAC is still excellent.

NAC is a great series and a go-to for myself. Good evangelical exegesis
  9. David Taylor, Jr.
The NAC is one of my favorite commentary sets. I read it for every passage I am studying.
  10. James Bradford
I enjoy the set but NO Ephesians is a glaring gap in the NT set and the gap has been there for many years now.
