As the psalms are a microcosm of the Old Testament, so the Expositions of the Psalms can be seen as a microcosm of Augustinian thought. In the Book of Psalms are to be found the history of the people of Israel, the theology and spirituality of the Old Covenant, and a treasury of human experience expressed in prayer and poetry. So too does the work of expounding the psalms recapitulate and focus the experiences of Augustine’s personal life, his theological reflections and his pastoral concerns as Bishop of Hippo. The full set of 6 Volumes of the Expositions of the Psalms is translated by Maria Boulding.
“And so, his understanding cannot be reckoned. Let human voices fall silent and human thoughts be still. Let them not stretch out toward what is incomprehensible as though they could comprehend, but only as seeking to participate in it. For we shall indeed participate. We shall not ourselves be that reality which we attempt to grasp, nor shall we grasp it totally, but we shall be participants in it.” (Page 505)
“But, because you refuse to say this and persist in justifying your deeds in opposition to the word of God, the sentence recorded in scripture will fall upon you: The Lord who is just will break the necks of sinners.” (Page 135)
“If he has paid so much, is he to be regarded as untrustworthy because a few items still remain?” (Page 462)
“They will belch forth the memory of the abundance of your sweetness:” (Page 451)
“Perhaps the one from whom God has taken it all may protest, ‘O God, what have I done to you? Why have you taken things away from me, yet given them to others? You shower gifts on the ungodly and deprive your own followers.’ You are accusing God of being unjust and lauding your own justice. Turn it around the other way: accuse yourself and praise him. You will be on the right lines if you find God pleasing in all the good things he does and do not find him displeasing in any of the bad things you suffer. This is what it means to call upon God in truth. When people invoke him like this, he hears them.” (Page 466)
