Herschel Hobbs Commentary: Bible Studies for Life, Winter 2017-18

This quarter’s Study Themes are: Jesus Changes Everything No one questions the influence of Jesus Christ on culture and history, but Christians know Jesus is more than just a significant person in history. He is the supreme revelation of God, the Son of God come to earth. This truth is foundational to Christianity, but it is more than just a doctrinal statement. In His love, Jesus came to earth to bring us into a relationship with God—and that changes everything. Jesus cares about every aspect of our lives, and He calls us to follow Him so that He can transform us to be like Him. In these sessions, we will see how Jesus calls us into the adventure of following Him. This life of discipleship is characterized by obeying His teaching and bearing spiritual fruit for God. As we follow Jesus, we’ll inevitably go through difficult times where we are called to trust Him and rely on Him rather than ourselves. We will be reminded that Jesus provides everything we need, including salvation, healing, provision, and correction. He truly does change everything for us. Made for Something More Followers of Christ know the joy of a life set free from sin and brought into a relationship with Christ that is eternal. The Christian life, though, is far more than “getting saved” and waiting for heaven. As wonderful as that is, God has even more in store for us. We were created and redeemed for something more: to live our lives in Christ today. In order to do that, we must have a firm grasp of our identity in Christ and the mission God has called us to. We are children of God and our lives have great value now and into eternity. As members of God’s family, we are privileged to participate with God in His great mission to save a lost world. Our Father graciously works through us to minister to others, and we represent Him in all that we do. To be effective in this holy calling, we must not become too attached to the things of this world; instead, we must maintain an eternal perspective. We are to reflect the light of Christ to people living in darkness. This partnership with God through Jesus is the “something more” we’re made for. The Herschel Hobbs Commentary is designed for group leaders and group members who desire a more extensive exposition of the Bible passages in LifeWay’s Bible Studies for Life series.
