Gary Steven Shogren received his MDiv and MA in New Testament exegesis from Biblical Theological Seminary and his PhD in New Testament exegesis from the University of Aberdeen. The author of numerous articles, many of them on Pauline theology, he is the author of 1–2 Thessalonians in the Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament. He and his family are currently missionaries in Costa Rica through WorldVenture.

I have been preaching through 1 Corinthians over the past few years. In preparation for each sermon I have been reading the commentaries on 1 Corinthians put out by Fee, Garland, Hodge, Calvin, Wright, Thiselton, Witherington, Ciampa and Rosner, Morris, and Carson ("The Cross and Christian Ministry" and "Showing the Spirit"). Shogren's commentary is tied with Fee and Garland's commentaries as the most helpful out of the bunch. His commentary has proved to be the most helpful pastorally. After studying each individual passage at length before consulting commentaries, I generally find myself reading Shogren's commentary first and then reviewing it last because it has been the most helpful for me as a pastor. This is not to say that Shogren's commentary lacks the technical precision that the other commentaries provide. He certainly does deal adequately with those grammatical and cultural matters which directly have to do with the text. However, Shogren's commentary has proved to be the most beneficial as both a resource which informs the head and yet aims at feeding the soul. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to both grow in a knowledge of the contents of 1 Corinthians and to be personally challenged, rebuked, and encouraged by it.
