The Story of Catholics in America is a popular history of the Catholic Church in the United States from pre-colonial times to the present. It is the story of a people rather than just an institution. It tells about the missionaries and settlers, patricians and immigrants, public leaders, renegades, saints, clergy, and lay people that made their impression on the American nation and on American religious attitudes. In the process it describes how the democratic American tradition and the ancient Catholic culture encountered each other, learned from each other, and enriched each other.
