Overview

In Mary for All Christians one of Britain’s most distinguished and well-loved Reformed theologians explains basic Christian beliefs held about Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ. A long-time member of the Ecumenical Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the author intended this book for all Christians, in hope that they might find in Mary resources for reconciliation, rather than reason for conflict.

Mary for All Christians deals unflinchingly with questions that have been matters of fierce controversy: the Marian dogmas and Catholic devotions, including current debates concerning the place of Mary in Scripture, and the meaning of her Immaculate Conception and Assumption, as well as the proposal for a new Marian dogma (Co-redemption). Each chapter explores a different event associated with Mary, including the meaning of the feminine in Christianity, and compares the values represented by Mary in Catholic devotion with those prevalent in today’s society. This updated second edition of a key text of the ecumenical movement also includes a new introduction and takes account of the current Roman Catholic debates on the subject of “Mary Corredemptrix.”

From the Preface

A genuinely personal and biblical view [sees each human being] as made in the image of God and destined for God, a being still capable of responding to God and of serving God in the work of building up the creation. This hopeful view of the human race is personified and enshrined in Mary.

—John Macquarrie
