Top Highlights

“It now refers to the Day of Judgment. The description in 3:1–5 has become a classic passage because it is quoted in Acts 2:17–21.” (Volume 1, Page 350)

“Through the many biblical books flows the continuing saga of God’s love for Israel and for the church. Each of the biblical authors, no matter how much separated in time, culture, and literary style, shares a conviction that God’s presence is felt in human history and that God invites the human family to respond with faith and integrity.” (Volume 1, Page 3)

“But the Greeks stressed the tension between the flesh and the spirit, which presupposed the superiority of the spirit and the inferiority of the flesh. For them, the spirit represented the immortal, life-giving aspect of human experience, whereas the body or flesh signified the weaker, sensual, mortal aspect that had to be subordinated to the spirit in order to find happiness.” (Volume 1, Page 469)

“the official Roman Catholic decision about the canon did not come until the Council of Trent in the sixteenth century” (Volume 1, Page 4)

“here it means a prefiguration of what is to come in Christ, as it is used in the Pauline literature; cf. Col 2:17.” (Volume 2, Page 1713)

The study guide information is a superb reference. Provides a good objective overview of each book in the bible and a grounded sense of what interpretations carry the weight of a majority of scripture scholars.

The Reading Guides are really good introductions to each book of the Bible (and other topics)--expand the table of contents menu and make sure you don't miss out on the Reading Guides section.
