Overview

Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, the editor of the monumental Catechism of the Catholic Church, provides concise, sage commentary on the same Catechism. Through this volume’s meditations, Schönborn’s hope is not only for the reader to have a better grasp of Catholic doctrine and belief, but to grow in a greater love of the person of Jesus Christ. With practical advice and insight that synthesizes Scripture, the Church Fathers, and the wisdom of the saints, this volume is meant to move the spirit into closer devotion to the Christ who envisioned it all.

Schönborn guides the reader through the end of the Catechism to develop a deeper life of prayer. In these meditations, Schönborn helps the reader to have a better grasp of Catholic prayer in its various forms, including contemplative prayer, with a special emphasis on the Lord’s Prayer.

Top Highlights

“This desert experience is part of the Christian’s path through life. The ‘old man’ in us resists deliverance from slavery to sin.” (Page 29)

“All three stages are, as it were, archetypes of the paths of prayer: the phase of growing up, education, and human accomplishments; then a radical turn that means leaving everything—prestige, knowledge, power—in order to be alone with God in the desert. Finally, the phase of maturity, in which God can place the person completely in his service, with the treasure of experience and knowledge, but also the poverty and the deprivations of the desert period. The life of Moses thus shows us the way to friendship with God, to the goal of all prayer.” (Pages 26–27)

“Because she is ‘full of grace’, her prayer is full, complete devotion to God. So full of trust, so full of the Holy Spirit should our prayer become also: the prayer of the children of God (CCC 2617).” (Page 40)

“That is why the Church, too, in her prayer of intercession, prays ‘for all men’ (1 Tim 2:1), even for her enemies and persecutors, and also ‘for the salvation of those who reject the Gospel’.” (Page 54)

“For his people Moses ‘stood in the breach’ (Ps 106:23)—a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, who laid down his life for all” (Page 29)
