SCHÜRER, EMIL (1844–1910)
German New Testament scholar

After studying at Erlangen, Berlin, Heidelberg, and Leipzig, Schürer lectured at Leipzig (1896–1878), Giessen (1878–1890), Kiel (1890–1895), and Göttingen (1895–1910). In 1876 he founded the journal Theologische Literaturzeitung and edited it for twenty–six years. He devoted his life to the study of Judaism around the beginning of the Christian era. Over the years he gradually expanded his handbook of New Testament history (1874) into a famous, massive, and standard five–volume treatise entitled A History of the Jewish People in the Time of Christ (1886–1890; English translation, 1890–1891).
