In this first of two volumes on the Gospel according to Luke, Joseph A. Fitzmyer provides an exhaustive introduction, a definitive new translation, and extensive notes and commentary on Luke’s Gospel. Fitzmyer brings to the task his mastery of ancient and modern languages, his encyclopedic knowledge of the sources, and his intimate acquaintance with the questions and issues occasioned by the third Synoptic Gospel.
Luke’s unique literary and linguistic features, its relation to the other Gospels and the book of Acts, and its distinctive theological slant are discussed in detail by the author. The Jesus of Luke’s Gospel speaks to the Greco-Roman world of first-century Christians, giving the followers of Jesus a reason for remaining faithful. Fitzmyer’s exposition of this Gospel helps modern-day Christians hear the good news afresh.
“But I find myself in agreement with J. M. Creed who thus argued for the presumption that the tradition is true: ‘Luke … is not personally a prominent figure in the apostolic age.… If the Gospel and Acts did not already pass under his name there is no obvious reason why tradition should have associated them with him’ (The Gospel, xiii–xiv).” (Page 41)
“For reasons that I shall try to set forth below, I regard Luke as a Gentile Christian, not, however, as a Greek, but as a non-Jewish Semite, a native of Antioch, where he was well educated in a Hellenistic atmosphere and culture.” (Page 42)
“It is not that Luke has spoiled the kerygma. He has simply played it in another key. He proclaims the basic Christian message to the church of his day, assuring it that what is being proclaimed differs not from what was proclaimed at the outset.” (Page 13)
“The heavy dependence on the Greek OT makes it evident that it is a cento-like composition, a mosaic of OT expressions drawn from the LXX.” (Page 359)
“Jesus is not just Moses redivivus or Elias redivivus; he is God’s Son and Chosen One.” (Page 793)
