Digital Verbum Edition
Of all the late Michael Ramsey’s many books, The Christian Priest Today is perhaps the best loved and most enduring. In this new edition, the central part remains unaltered and is composed of charges to ordination candidates, with an emphasis on the intellectual and devotional life of the minister in an increasingly self-sufficient world. The first chapter has been rewritten and two new chapters added to incorporate recent alterations in the life of the Church: the ministry of the laity, the theology of priesthood, and the roles of bishop and presbyter in the context of the practical meaning of divine vocation.

“First, the priest is the teacher and preacher, and as such he is the man of theology. He is pledged to be a dedicated student of theology; and his study need not be vast in extent but it will be deep in its integrity, not in order that he may be erudite but in order that he may be simple.” (Page 7)
“First, let us agree that the first priority is to preach the gospel to men and women so that they may be converted to our Lord. But if a person is to be truly converted the conversion must embrace all his personal and social relationships.” (Page 36)
“So today the ordained priest is called to reflect the priesthood of Christ and to serve the priesthood of the people of God, and to be one of the means of grace whereby God enables the Church to be the Church.” (Page 111)
“When we say ‘he lives to make intercession’ we note that the verb ἐντυγχανεῖν which we habitually translate ‘intercede’ means literally not to make petitions or indeed to utter words at all but to meet, to encounter, to be with someone on behalf of or in relation to others. Jesus is with the Father; with him in the intimate response of perfect humanity; with him in the power of Calvary and Easter; with him as one who bears us all upon his heart, our Son of Man, our friend, our priest; with him as our own.” (Pages 13–14)
“We should always distinguish carefully a non-Christian conception of the rights of people to do what they like, and a Christian conception of their right to become by God’s grace their own truest selves.” (Page 38)
