Overview

Written in the style of popular modern historical narratives, The American Revolution presents a complete and historically sound account of the American war for independence. Relive the heart-stopping epic of America’s birth as historian John Fiske examines every detail of the revolutionary era, including the pre-war boiling points, the Stamp Act of 1765, the Boston Massacre of 1770, the Tea Act of 1773, and the Coercive Act of 1774. Fiske explains how Washington orchestrated the war, survived the winter in Valley Forge, escaped New York, and ultimately led a patchwork Continental Army to victory. He traces the politics of the war, vividly displays the personalities of America’s leaders, and documents how charismatic American diplomats secured French support in the struggle against England.

John Fiske (Evolutionist, Philosopher and Historian, 1842–1901) John Fiske, born Edmund Fiske Green, was an American philosopher, historian, and lecturer who popularized evolutionary theory (influenced by Herbert Spencer and Charles Darwin) and wrote extensively on American history, philosophy, religion, and mythology. He authored numerous books, essays, and lectures, many of which were published in the late 19th century. I am reading this so I haven't had time to review it... seems like Logos is forcing me to give a star rating.... Logos please do not force ratings. I am giving it a two but it should be ignored until I remove this note. John Fiske and Justin Winsor, both prominent 19th-century American historians, approached history with starkly contrasting frameworks. Fiske, influenced by Darwin and Spencer, adopted an evolutionary slant, interpreting the American Revolution as a progressive step toward democratic civilization, blending narrative with philosophical speculation in works like The American Revolution (1891). His histories emphasize teleological progress, often prioritizing broad themes over archival rigor. In contrast, Winsor’s framework was empirical and source-driven, focusing on primary documents, maps, and critical bibliography, as seen in The Reader’s Handbook of the American Revolution (1879). He avoided speculative theories, aiming for objective reconstruction of events through meticulous evidence, reflecting a "scientific" historiography that prioritized facts over interpretive grand narratives.
