Stanley Hauerwas is one of the most influential American theologians of the last 50 years. The impact of his work reverberates across many fields—theology, ethics, politcs, jurisprudence, and more. Celebrated by theologians and ministers across denominational lines—and a lively dialogue partner of both Christian and non-Christian intellectuals—Hauerwas infuses stimulating, theological discourse with color, vitality, and humor.
This collection provides a glimpse of the wide range of issues Hauerwas has addressed in his long career. Four volumes of essays, sermons, and prayers reveal the profound faith that undergirds his academic work. His Christianity, Democracy, and the Radical Ordinary remains an influential statement on Christian political engagement, and conveys Hauerwas’ unique brand of radical democracy.
He’s lent his intellect and influence to numerous subjects, but Hauerwas is a theologian at heart. An early champion of narrative theology, he provides a thorough primer on the approach with Why Narrative? Readings in Narrative Theology. Finally, his Working with Words: On Learning to Speak Christian demonstrates the importance of language for theological discourse, showing how the words theologians use to speak about God is just as important as their content.
