Overview

For five centuries, the Douay-Rheims Bible has remained one of the standard English Bible translations for Roman Catholics around the world. As the first and most enduring translation of the Latin Vulgate, the Douay-Rheims was translated at the end of the sixteenth century at the initiative of Gregory Martin. It quickly rose in popularity among English Catholics—becoming an essential part of Catholic identity during the English Counter-Reformation—and has been reprinted hundreds of times in the centuries that followed.

Logos is pleased to offer the version of the Douay-Rheims Bible revised by Richard Challoner, which eliminated archaic words and English Latinisms, and made the Bible more accessible to English-speaking Catholics. This revision, first published in America in 1790, has undergone numerous reprintings throughout the nineteenth and twentieth century, making it the most widely-used and bestselling English translation of the Vulgate.

  • With Logos, you can access the Douay-Rheims Bible in an easy-to-use digital format
  • Use the Bible search function to perform simple word or phrase searches, or more complex proximity, data type, or field searches
  • Include the Douay-Rheims Bible in reports and features in your Passage Guide

Most Highlighted Verses in Douay-Rheims Bible

Genesis 2:6–7: But a spring rose out of the earth, watering all the surface of the earth. And the Lord God formed man of the slime of the earth: and breathed into his face the breath of life, and man became a living soul.

Genesis 2:16–18: And he commanded him, saying: Of every tree of paradise thou shalt eat: But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat. For in what day soever thou shalt eat of it, thou shalt die the death. And the Lord God said: It is not good for man to be alone: let us make him a help like unto himself.

Proverbs 3:5–8: Have confidence in the Lord with all thy heart, and lean not upon thy own prudence. In all thy ways think on him, and he will direct thy steps. Be not wise in thy own conceit: fear God, and depart from evil:

Isaiah 7:14: Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son and his name shall be called Emmanuel.

Matthew 11:25–30: At that time Jesus answered and said: I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to little ones. Yea, Father: for so hath it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered to me by my Father. And no one knoweth the Son but the Father: neither doth any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom it shall please the Son to reveal him.

Matthew 28:18–20: And Jesus coming, spoke to them, saying: All power is given to me in heaven and in earth. Going therefore, teach ye all nations: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. And behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.

John 14:6: Jesus saith to him: I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me.

Ephesians 2:8–10: For by grace you are saved through faith: and that not of yourselves, for it is the gift of God. Not of works, that no man may glory. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus in good works, which God hath prepared that we should walk in them.

2 Thessalonians 2:14: Therefore, brethren, stand fast: and hold the traditions, which you have learned, whether by word or by our epistle.

Hebrews 8:2: A minister of the holies and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord hath pitched, and not man.

Unhappily, Verbum's Douay Rheims Bible resource is extremely lacking, being a non-interlinear, null-metadata Bible and is so inadequate as an "Enhanced for Verbum" resource. Please bring this Holy Bible to respectability commensurate with a digital resource in the penultimate digital Platform, Verbum. Pax Christi in regno Christi

Good day. Can anyone provide a status on Verbum's updating its Douay-Rheims Translation, please? What are the plans (and timeline) to bring this Scriptural Gem to the status of the distinguished digital diadem which it deserves for the Glory of God and HMC? Pax Christi

Ms. Sonja Corbitt’s piece, “What Bible Do Catholics Use? The Most Popular of the Approved” (https://blog.verbum.com/2024/08/what-bible-do-catholics-use/), lists the Douay-Rheims as the fourth most popular Translation. When is Logos Verbum going to overhaul the primitive text-only resource (no interlinear, no verse concordance linkage as in the RSV2CE, no surface texts no Encyclicals on Bible Study as traditionally included in Catholic Bibles, features as found in the Haydock D-R, or Bishop Challoner D-R, or other print resources) to a Bible worthy of it’s value to the Faithful and your Customers? Such a poor treatment of our Scriptural Patrimony in the current Resource as provided by Verbum is worthy of lamentation. Pax Christi in regno Christi

Now that Logos Verbum has incorporated Latin Lemmas into the context menu alongside the original language Lemmas (software update 32), when will Verbum provide an unadulterated Douay-Rheims Translation with a Latin Reverse Interlinear? Like ASAP... BTW, Ps 121:1 is still MIA. Also, in 1 Pet 2:1 the word is "froward" not "forward" , as in Pro 4:24 D-R froward /ˈfrəʊəd/ ■ adjective archaic (of a person) difficult to deal with; contrary. —DERIVATIVES frowardly adverb frowardness noun —ORIGIN Old English frāward ‘leading away from, away’, based on Old Norse frá (see FRO, FROM). Also, the Bible Verse Mapping of The Holy Bible, Translated from the Latin Vulgate. (2009) Logos Bible Software is substandard and inaccurate. The whole 1-4 Kings and Paralipomenon/Chronicles bit for instance is problematic (same problem with the Clementine Vulgate Logos resource). Why the Protestant Chapter names manifest in the Douay Rheims, whose Bible Book names are from the LXX and Vulgate? Are you aware or considerate of the complications when using the Douay Rheims as one' s Prioritized Bible?
