Edward Dennett was raised in the Church of England, but he was converted as a youth and later became minister of a Baptist Chapel in Greenwich. He contracted an severe illness that caused him to be away from his congregation for a year, during which time he met some members of the Plymouth Brethren. After recovering, Dennett decided to resign his pulpit due to theological differences he held.
