This introduction is written by the Catechism’s general editor, Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, and the head of the Bishops Commission for the implementation of the Catechism, Joseph Cardinal Razinger. It provides helpful insights on how to read and study the Catechism.

Joseph Ratzinger took the name Benedict XVI upon becoming pope in 2005. He retired from the papacy in 2013 and is now referred to as pope emeritus.
Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI, is one of the most revered Catholic prelates, scholars, theologians, teachers, and authors of our time. He has spoken on many crucial subjects, including sexual consumerism, roles of men and women today, marriage, the priesthood, and the future of the world. Some of his works include Jesus of Nazareth, Called to Communion: Understanding the Church Today, and What It Means to Be a Christian.
Christoph Cardinal Schönborn is an Austrian theologian and a cardinal of the Catholic Church. He currently serves as the archbishop of Vienna and the president of the Austrian Bishops Conference.
He was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1970 and received his Licentiate of Sacred Theology only a year later. He later studied under Joseph Ratzinger in Regensburg, and shortly after received his doctorate in Sacred Theology in Paris. He was a professor of dogmatics at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, in the 1970s, and in 1980 was appointed a member of the International Theological Commission of the Holy See. In 1987, he became the editorial secretary for the Catechism of the Catholic Church. In 1991, he was chosen to be an auxiliary bishop of Vienna, and in 1995 became its archbishop.
This companion volume to the Catechism contains all the passages of Sacred Scripture referred to in the Catechism, arranged according to the paragraphs in which the references are made.
