Overview

Are we hapless victims of life’s whims? Are we driven along by some blind and impersonal force? Are we battered by circumstances beyond all control? A thousand times, “No!” says pastor and author Alistair Begg. Instead, Begg says we are the objects of God’s providential care. We reside under his guiding and protecting hand. It’s an amazing and comforting fact: God rules and overrules in the circumstances of life. Alistair Begg captures the powerful lessons of Joseph’s life in this richly textured study. Readers will see God at work, shaping Joseph’s circumstances so that he can ultimately redeem and reconcile his family. And they’ll see the hand of God in their lives, lovingly guiding them through their disappointments and struggles to a place of peace.

“The phrase God gave me years ago, during the 1964 rebellion in Congo, in the night of my own greatest need, was this: ‘Can you thank Me for trusting you with this experience, even if I never tell you why?’ ’ Dr. Roseveare was able to say yes to that question.” (Page 87)

“‘I walked a mile with pleasure and she chattered all the way, but left me none the wiser for all she had to say. I walked a mile with sorrow and ne’er a word said she, but oh the things I learned from her, when sorrow walked with me.’” (Page 59)

“We make a mistake when we try to determine God’s guidance on the basis of what is the most comfortable, acceptable, and rational to us. God’s providential dealings will overrule even in the fracturings and separations and jealousies of life.” (Page 31)

“So we mustn’t look upon the dark and disappointing times of our lives as those that thwart the unfolding of God’s purpose. We must learn to trust Him, even in the dark.” (Page 32)

“So we are beginning to see that even when, as Calvin puts it, the world appears to be aimlessly walking about, the Lord is everywhere at work.” (Page 44)
