The Eucharist: A Mystery of Faith

  • Author: Joseph M. Champlin
  • Publisher: Paulist Press
  • Publication Date: 2005
  • Pages: 80

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

In The Eucharist, popular writer and lecturer Joseph M. Champlin explores the eucharistic mystery from three different perspectives: as sacrifice, sacrament, and presence. In addition, he analyzes another mystery of faith: the Paschal, Passover, or Easter Mystery of Christ’s life, death, resurrection, and return.

Champlin outlines several desirable inner qualities with which we greet the Risen Christ as our guest, and describes ways in which the Eucharist can inspire us to sere others. Each chapter begins with a personal reflection by a eucharistic minister and concludes with a brief related excerpt from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Joseph M. Champlin has been a parish priest in the diocese of Syracuse for nearly 50 years, most recently serving as rector of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. He lectures on pastoral subjects and is the author of over 50 books, including An Important Office of Immense Love.

Eucharist and American Culture

  • Pages: 112

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

Eucharist and American Culture is a unique resource that considers the impact of American individualism upon the liturgical celebration of the Eucharist. Short, insightful chapters offer key sociological points and liturgical understanding as well as summarize recent academic works and research results of Robert Bellah, Robert Putnam, and Jean Twenge. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal is consulted regarding the celebration of the liturgy.

Suitable for use as an undergraduate religious studies resource, this book will also find a place in courses in religion and culture and sociology of religion, as well as in seminary formation programs and programs for parish liturgical ministers.

Dennis C. Smolarski is a Jesuit priest who has been on the faculty of the department of mathematics and computer science at Santa Clara University in California since 1982. The Eucharist and Social Justice

  • Author: Margaret Scott
  • Publisher: Paulist Press
  • Publication Date: 2009
  • Pages: 160

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

The Eucharist and Social Justice argues that the Eucharist is deeply political and potentially subversive. It explores the inseparable relationship between Eucharist and social justice. The eucharistic texts embrace a whole host of social issues around poverty and injustice, and this book teases out their wider implications. It also rediscovers the dimension that God intended for the Eucharist: to be the life of the world.

Margaret Scott’s twin passions, for the Eucharist and for justice, illuminate each other beautifully in this splendid book. We are shown how the Eucharist opens our eyes to the sufferings of this world and gives us hope—confident in God’s promises—to challenge the structures of injustice. This is a book born of the vivid personal experience of sharing the lives of some of the poorest people, especially in Latin America. It is also the fruit of study, prayer, and the Eucharist itself.

—Rev. Timothy Radcliffe, OP, director, Las Casas Institute of Blackfriars, Oxford, England

Margaret Scott is a member of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She has held leadership positions in her own congregation and in religious life at both national and international levels. Widely traveled in Asia, Europe, and South America, she has a global view and an experienced insight into the universal church and the international community. She is a regular speaker in different countries, the director of the St. Raphaela Center in Philadelphia, and a professor of social ethics at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Eucharist: The Meal and the Word

  • Author: Ghislain Lafont
  • Translator: Jeremy Driscoll
  • Publisher: Paulist Press
  • Publication Date: 2008
  • Pages: 170

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

The sacraments are rooted in the most basic elements of human existence. In Eucharist: The Meal and the Word, an essay of “meditative theology,” Ghislain Lafont reflects on the intimate connection between food and language in the Eucharist. Tracing the progression from the act of eating to the celebration of a festal meal, he then moves to language, because the festal meal often concludes with a discourse addressed to the heroes of the feast. Finally, he examines eucharistic discourse in order to relate the Eucharist to all other festal meals: what it remembers; what is given in it to eat; and what is realized. The Eucharist turns out to be the place of communion with God founded on the memory of Jesus Christ, hoped for in its perfection in eschatological time, and already realized in the symbolic celebration. And yet it also reveals itself as the symbolic fullness of human existence.

Ghislain Lafont is a Benedictine monk from the Abbey of La Pierre qui Vire in France. For over 20 years he was professor of theology at the Pontifical Atheneum Sant’Anselmo in Rome. He is the author of numerous books on systematic theology, including God, Time, and Being and A Theological Journey.

Models of the Eucharist

  • Author: Kevin W. Irwin
  • Publisher: Paulist Press
  • Publication Date: 2005
  • Pages: 384

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

Models of the Eucharist outlines how the Eucharist is integral to and integrative of nothing less than the Christian life itself. Its premise is that the liturgy of the Eucharist—especially the post-Vatican II liturgy—should be a primary source for both eucharistic theology and eucharistic spirituality.

With great clarity and theological depth and a profound awareness of the pastoral needs of the church today, Monsignor Irwin has written a primary ‘model’ that will be a classic for this and future generations of liturgical scholars and practitioners.

—Wilton D. Gregory, archbishop of Atlanta, former president, United States Catholic Conference of Bishops

[Kevin Irwin] invites readers to approach Eucharist as a present enactment of the paschal mystery and a way of life that challenges us to renew in celebration and in life what it means to be a eucharistic church.

—Sr. Joyce Ann Zimmermann, editor, Liturgical Ministry

Kevin W. Irwin is a priest of the archdiocese of New York. He earned his STD degree from San Anselmo, Rome. He holds the Walter J. Schmitz Chair of Liturgical Studies and is the director of the liturgical studies program at The Catholic University of America. He is the author of several books on liturgy and sacraments, including 101 Questions and Answers on the Mass.

Finally, the model focuses on the actual rites of the Church and some of the pastoral challenges Catholics encounter in their efforts to live the truth that only memory can treasure.

With the Silent Glimmer of God’s Spirit

  • Author: Lambert J. Leijssen
  • Publisher: Paulist Press
  • Publication Date: 2007
  • Pages: 147

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

With the Silent Glimmer of God’s Spirit gives a comprehensive account of recent developments in sacramental theology in the context of postmodern thinking. Lambert J. Leijssen uses the concepts of “gift” and “icon” to speak about the sacraments in a way that implies interaction between giver and recipient. Leijssen discusses the individual sacraments according to the usual categories of initiation, healing, and vocation, but views these categories through the lens of their relation to everyday life. He considers the grace of each sacrament as a gift of the Holy Spirit by which the Christian’s daily life is illuminated with a silent glimmer of God’s Spirit. He also looks at the current realities faced by those responsible for administering the sacraments and considers the pastoral implications. The book concludes with ecumenical perspectives for the celebration of the sacraments in agreement with the Eastern churches and the churches of the Protestant Reformation.

This intelligent, deeply spiritual reexamination of the Catholic doctrine of the sacraments sheds new light on their significance in the Christian’s life, while remaining faithful to their traditional meaning.

—Louis Dupré, professor emeritus, religious studies, Yale University

Lambert J. Leijssen is a priest of the diocese of Hasselt and professor of theology at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. He has written numerous publications on liturgy and the sacraments.

The Future of the Sacrament of Penance

  • Author: Frank O’Loughlin
  • Publisher: Paulist Press
  • Publication Date: 2009
  • Pages: 208

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

The sacrament of penance has fallen on hard times in recent decades. There is a much diminished use of the sacrament, and frequent reports of dissatisfaction with the experience of it on the part of both penitents and confessors. Reversing this trend would seem to require a changed mentality. In The Future of the Sacrament of Penance, Father Frank O’Loughlin aims to equip us for just such a change.

First, O’Loughlin explores the rise of the varied forms of the sacrament of penance, locating them within their respective ecclesial and social contexts and highlighting the considerable transitions through which this sacrament has gone. Building on this, he stimulates readers to look at the issues which remain to be addressed in this time of widespread change in order to move forward into a renewed understanding and use of the sacrament.

Frank O’Loughlin, STD, was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Melbourne, Australia, in 1969. He has a PhD in systematic theology from the Urban University in Rome. Since 1977 he has lectured widely in sacramental theology and liturgy, and was director of the Diocesan Liturgy Centre in Melbourne from 1977 to 1992. He continues to write and lecture, and currently serves as the parish priest of Sandringham in Melbourne.

Christ, Our Love for All Seasons

  • Author: Ralph Wright
  • Publisher: Paulist Press
  • Publication Date: 2005
  • Pages: 240

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

Christ, Our Love for All Seasons is a prayer book geared toward every liturgical season in the year—and each “season” of our lives. All the major feast days are featured with poems, hymns, and psalms relevant to the occasion. It also functions as a poetry supplement to the one- and four-volume Liturgy of the Hours, which the Second Vatican Council proclaimed “The Public Prayer of the Church.” Father Ralph Wright’s book helps all seekers to pray this ever-ancient, ever-new prayer.

For over 40 years Ralph Wright has been involved in the poetic process. His poems speak deeply to the human conditions; the mystery of faith and love, they longings of the human heart. A prayerful reading of these poems and prayers will surely enrich one’s journey, for the language of poetry stirs something deep within the soul. Fr. Ralph Wright, OSB, articulates in verse and prayer his experience of life and love.

—Robert F. Morneau, auxiliary bishop, Green Bay, Wisconsin

Father Wright’s book validates him as many persons: psalmist, meditator, homilist, priest, but it cannot camouflage the poet, and a genuine one at that. Although his writing is always at the service of the man of prayer whom he truly is, the poet speaks equally to the point. Images flash out with a sort of studied abandon and are arresting for their pertinence and inspiration

—Brother Augustine Denis Towey, department of theatre, Niagra University

Ralph Wright, OSB, (b. 1938) studied at Ampleforth College in Yorkshire, England. He spent two years in the British Army before becoming a monk at Ampleforth Abbey. After coming down from Oxford, he spent four years studying theology at Fribourg in Switzerland. Immediately after ordination to the priesthood in 1970, he joined the abbey’s new community at St. Louis, Missouri, where he teaches theology in the school and is director of vocations.

Gospel Spirituality and Catholic Worship

  • Publisher: Paulist Press
  • Publication Date: 2001
  • Pages: 144

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

Gospel Spirituality and Catholic Worship returns to the mindset of Jesus as encountered in the Gospels to discover the unity between spirituality and worship. This book helps Catholics integrate their personal prayer life and liturgical experience.

The authors of this timely book . . . show how our liturgical and spirituality renewal should intertwine and be mutually nourishing to each other. They have succeeded admirably. Their book is filled with insightful statements about gospel spirituality, which prepare one to internalize the prayerful dynamic of the eucharistic celebration. One would like to be able to remember them all during the actual celebration of the sacred mysteries.

—Everett A. Diederich, SJ, scholar-in-residence, Stroble Center for Liturgy, Saint Louis University

In our highly individualized and empirical world, Paul Cioffi and William Sampson have dared to offer an insightful exegesis into the way that the celebration of the Eucharist can and ought to be spiritually fulfilling for both priest and individual participant. Their work ought to become a standard in the libraries of liturgists, spiritual directors, and those who might have been put off by the tensions often found between the performance of the liturgy and the desire for a deeper life of prayer.

—Wilton D. Gregory, bishop of Belleville, Illinois

Paul L. Cioffi, SJ, is director of the Institute of Pastoral Renewal, Inc., in Washington, DC. He is also on the staff of the Institute for Continuing Theological Education at the North American College in Rome. He holds a PhD from the Catholic University of America.

  • Pages: 218

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

Sheer Grace shows the unbreakable link between theology, liturgy, and spirituality, grounding it in a radical tradition of liturgy as transformation, which has its roots in the Scriptures and lived liturgical experience of our biblical and ecclesial ancestors.

At the same time, Draško Dizdar looks to the present experience of Christians who feel a deep need for the kind of transforming experience that liturgy can be. He looks to the future with hope as a gift of “sheer grace,” as something only God can and does give, and not as something we can manufacture by our own efforts at renewal or restoration.

Draško Dizdar is a Camaldolese Benedictine Oblate and a theologian. He holds a PhD, and has lived and worked in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. He is currently in Tasmania, establishing a contemplative community for young people and working for the Catholic Education Office of the Hobart Archdiocese in the ongoing formation of Catholic school teachers.
