In this newly updated, expanded version of his popular work of apologetics, Mark P. Shea presents a lively and entertaining look at his conversion to Catholicism from Evangelicalism and his discovery of Christian tradition. As an Evangelical, Shea accepted the principle of sola Scriptura (Scripture alone) as the basis of faith. Now as a Catholic convert, he skillfully explains how and why Sacred Tradition occupies a central role in Divine Revelation.
Tracing his own journey of intellectual and spiritual awakening, Shea begins by looking for a rejoinder to those modern-day false prophets who would claim that Scripture itself is not to be trusted, and ends with his conviction that tradition, as explained by the Catholic Church, is the only sure guarantee of the truth of the revelation of Jesus Christ.
A crystal clear and compelling case for Sacred Tradition, on the basis of logic, history and Scripture. It is simply the best I have found.
—Scott Hahn, author, Rome Sweet Home
This is not just another book of Catholic apologetics. It is not only a good think; it's also a good read. Concrete, clear, compelling arguments.
—Peter Kreeft, author, You Can Understand the Bible
An important service for Catholics, Evangelicals and all those seeking a firm grounding for Faith. Shea argues powerfully for the extra-biblical authority of Sacred Tradition as a depository and source of revelation side by side with the Bible, to which it testifies and which it interprets with authority.
—Russell Shaw, author, American Church
Mark P. Shea is a noted Catholic author, award-winning columnist, and nationally-known speaker. His book credits include Making Senses out of Scripture and This is My Body. Shea is a regular contributor to Catholic Parent Magazine and the National Catholic Register. He is senior content editor for Catholic Exchange. He is currently the host of Catholic Exchange’s daily podcast, Rock Solid. Shea coauthored many of the Catholic Scripture Studies with Dr. Scott Hahn.
In this work of Christology, Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, a world-renowned theologian, takes as his starting point the Apostle Paul’s statement, “But when the time had fully come, God sent for his Son, born of woman, born under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons” (Gal 4:4–5). Based on many years of lecturing on Christology, Cardinal Schönborn’s work moves from the solid conviction of faith that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah of Israel, the Son of the Living God, through the development of the Church’s understanding of this truth, to the consideration of contemporary issues and the views of various modern theologians.
God Sent His Son has the comprehensiveness and scholarly precision of a textbook but the insights and personal relevance of a work of spirituality.
Christoph Schönborn is an Austrian theologian and a cardinal of the Catholic Church. He currently serves as the archbishop of Vienna and the president of the Austrian Bishops Conference.
He was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1970 and received his Licentiate of Sacred Theology only a year later. He later studied under Joseph Ratzinger in Regensburg, and shortly after received his doctorate in Sacred Theology in Paris. He was a professor of dogmatics at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, in the 1970s, and in 1980 was appointed a member of the International Theological Commission of the Holy See. In 1987, he became the editorial secretary for the Catechism of the Catholic Church. In 1991, he was chosen to be an auxiliary bishop of Vienna, and in 1995 became its archbishop.
Ignorance of the Old Testament makes it impossible to comprehend the entire divine plan that stretches between the two Testaments. Highly-regarded spiritual writer and theologian Fr. Aidan Nichols shows how important it is to grasp that connection in order to understand better and to believe in the message and the person of Christ. Nichols maintains that we are ill-equipped to read and understand the great theologians, saints, and Scripture commentators of the Christian era without a deep familiarity with the Old Testament. Even understanding and appreciating the art of the Church remains limited if the Old Testament is a closed book for us.
Nichols draws on studies by biblical experts from various Christian denominations—notably Evangelicals and Anglicans—in writing this widely-appealing work. He also taps into the wisdom of Church Fathers and Doctors of the Church to illuminate the beauty of the relationship between the Old and New Testaments.
In this marvelous work of biblical theology and patristic ressourcement, Aidan Nichols illumines the pattern of God’s promises in salvation history in a manner that will be accessible and informative to students, pastors, and scholars.
—Matthew Levering, associate professor of theology, Ave Maria University
John Christopher “Aidan” Nichols, OP, (born 17 September 1948) is an academic and Catholic priest. Nichols served as the first John Paul II Memorial Visiting Lecturer at Oxford University for 2006 to 2008, the first lectureship of Catholic theology at that university since the Reformation. He is a member of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) and was formerly the prior of St. Michael and All Angels in Cambridge. He has written many books, including Light from the East: Authors and Themes in Orthodox Theology and Discovering Aquinas: An Introduction to His Life, Work, and Influence.
The beloved archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, whose cause for canonization is open in Rome, presents a profound and deeply spiritual look at the meaning of the priesthood and relationship of the priest with Christ as an “alter Christus”.
Sheen delves deeply into what he considers the main character of the priesthood, and one not often discussed, that of being, like Christ, a “holy victim”. To be like Christ, Sheen emphasizes that the priest must imitate Christ in His example of sacrifice, offering himself as a victim to make Christ’s Incarnation continually present in the world.
Venerable Fulton J. Sheen (May 8, 1895–December 9, 1979) was one of the most celebrated priests of the twentieth century. He was ordained in 1919 and taught theology at the Catholic University of America until 1951, when he became auxiliary bishop for the archdiocese of New York. By 1969, he was an archbishop in Wales. After his death, his cause for canonization was opened, and he was styled a Venerable in 2012.
Sheen’s popular radio and television programs reached as many as 30,000,000 weekly listeners, and earned him an Emmy Award for “Most Outstanding Television Personality”. He wrote over 60 books, including his autobiography, A Treasure in Clay. Among his other noted works are Life of Christ, Way to Happiness, and Seven Words of Jesus and Mary.
The Way of the Disciple explores six Gospel scenes in-depth to discover essential elements of Christian discipleship. Author Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis describes the basic requirements for receiving the Word of God effectively in our hearts and contemplates the vital position of the Mother of our Lord in the life of his disciples.
Leiva-Merikakis shows that the call to discipleship is above all an invitation to intimate companionship with Jesus, and that the “active apostolate” is the fruit of a life of prayer and adoration. This is the heart of a disciple’s life, which can never be swept up by mere activism.
I warmly recommend this book as a guide to true discipleship and engaged Gospel-reading.
—Cardinal Christoph Schonborn, editor, Catechism of the Catholic Church (U. S. Edition with Glossary and Index)
Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis obtained his PhD in comparative literature and theology from Emory University. Formerly a professor of literature and theology at the University of San Francisco, he is now a Trappist monk at St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts. He is the author of Fire of Mercy, Heart of the Word: Meditations on the Gospel according to Saint Matthew (3 vols.).
Theology and Sanity is one of the most popular books by noted Catholic theologian and apologist Frank J. Sheed. Ideal for the layman, it shows the practical aspects of theology in the life of a Christian believer. Sheed’s logic, clarity, and simplicity permeate this eminently readable book. Drawing from his 50 years of street-corner preaching, as well as his long career as an author, lecturer, and publisher, Sheed understands and effectively communicates the importance of theology and its relationship to living sanely in today’s world—providing a brilliant synthesis of the Catholic view of life.
Of Sheed’s many books, this one is my favorite . . .
—Karl Keating, author, Catholicism and Fundamentalism
Theology and Sanity is simply one of the best books on the Catholic faith ever written.
—Mark Brumley, president, Ignatius Press
Francis J. “Frank” Sheed (March 20, 1897–November 20, 1982) had a distinguished career as a publisher, lecturer, street-corner evangelist, and popular Catholic writer. He and his wife Maisie Ward were the founders of the major London publishing house Sheed & Ward. Sheed was born in Australia and converted to Catholicism at age 16. He became a noted Catholic apologist and lay theologian by the mid-twentieth century. His career spanned three continents, beginning in Australia, moving to England, and ending in the United States. His many popular books include To Know Christ Jesus, Theology and Sanity, Society and Sanity, and A Map of Life.
This modern spiritual classic by Frank Sheed, renowned author, publisher and lecturer, helps readers to know Christ as he actually lived among us. Sheed explores how Jesus interacted with those he encountered from his infancy to his passion and death—the God-man who was like us in all things except sin.
Sheed examines Christ’s effect upon others—how they saw him, and why. He looks at Mary and Joseph in their task of bringing up a baby who was literally adorable. He discusses John the Baptist, Mary of Bethany, Mary Magdalen, Nicodemus, and people that appear only for a moment—like the man born blind and the owners of the drowned swine. He addresses why the Pharisees would not accept Christ. Sheed employs wide learning, theological sophistication, spiritual insight, and a lucid style to bring the reader to a personal encounter with the living Lord.

This book contains a cycle of catechesis, or teachings on the Christian faith, which pose fundamental questions with respect to the confession of the faith. In simple but beautiful words and vibrant images, Christoph Cardinal Schönborn brings together the doctrine and practice of the Faith. He leads us to a deeper realization of who Christ is, what his saving mission was, and how we can know and love him in a personal and profound way.
To Know Jesus as the Christ is an inspiring and practical work by a great churchman about the eternal importance of the Christian faith, the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, and its relevance to our everyday life.
